What is it about?
Over the 12 weeks kids ages 6 to 10 will write an original play, then rehearse, direct and perform it in front of a live audience. Weekly acting/writing exercises and games provide plenty of opportunity for self-expression as well as more structured learning of dramatic storytelling, production design and acting methods.
PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED PLAYS
Since its inception, Laura has worked with hundreds of kids to write and perform 15 original plays – some that have gone on to be published by Drama Notebook, a top online publisher for educational kids plays. America’s Secret was just published in April 2020. Three adapted Lenape folklore plays are also published on this platform and available for licensing. These plays are perfect for kids who are studying social studies.
Todd Komarnicki, Screenwriter, "Sully"
"Laura really allows the kids to be the creators, while she expertly extracts story from them and teaches the joys of playwriting and the fundamentals of story structure. The program is a wonderland of creativity, and an ideal way to direct the frenzy of childhood energy towards a common goal that can bring laughter and wonder and discovery."
"A perfectly curated program that allows kids the freedom to create. It's absolutely boundless."
"This is the best class my child has ever taken. I can't believe it even exists."
"Laura's enthusiasm and knowledge about every aspect of theater... and way she brings the stories out of the kids is truly remarkable."
"Laura's work with the kids is truly on another level. I don't know how she does it."
About the Program/Teacher
Laura Rohrman is a mom to two PS89 students: Maya (5th grader) and Lilly (3rd grader). Laura has an MFA in from the Actors Studio Drama School/New School for Drama and works as a professional playwright, actor and choreographer. Laura created Playwriting For Kids in the fall of 2015 to share her love of theater and playwriting with her daughters. Soon she began teaching at PS89 as a volunteer, working alongside the teachers and within the school curriculum. The program was a success and Laura was asked to teach it in other schools in NY and NJ. Eventually the the class took its current shape as a private class in BPC. Since its inception, Laura has worked with hundreds of kids to write and perform 15 original new plays, including America's Secret as well as three adapted Native American plays based on the Lenape folklore that are published by Drama Notebook and being staged/used as learning tools at schools around the country.
